Our Goodreads goals are quickly closing in. What are you prioritizing for the end of the year?
All the books I’m going to prioritize are new releases, because I’d love to have more 2018 releases in my end-of-the-year list about my favorite books.
The Girl King by Mimi Yu
The Girl King by Mimi Yu is one of my most anticipated books for 2019. Since I got an ARC, I want to read it before release date, which is on January 8. I think I will, since I can’t wait to get to it. Also, can we talk about these covers? I think they’re both gorgeous, in very different ways.
Blanca & Roja
It’s not that I’m in a hurry to read Blanca & Roja, I don’t have to (it’s not an ARC), but I want to read it soon anyway because it would be sad if I love it but it doesn’t make it to my list of favorites of 2018. Also, it’s more Anna-Marie McLemore, of course I want to read it.
Mirage by Somaiya Daud
I own this one, I want to get to it soon – I think I’m going to like it a lot, and if that turns out to be true, I want to get to it before I write my “favorites of 2018” list. It was published this year and it’s a debut; if I like it that much, it deserves to be there. Anyway, I love the premise and I really liked the excerpt I read, so I have high hopes.
Creatures of Want and Ruin and/or Moonshine
I want to get to at least to one of these two, which are both prohibition-era fantasy (I don’t think I’ve ever read historical fiction based on that before). I own an ARC of Creatures of Want and Ruin and I’m hesitant to start it because I really didn’t like another book by Molly Tanzer, and I own a physical copy of Moonshine, which I’m also hesitant to start because of the mixed reviews. However, I love both of them as a concept (the first involves fungi and may or may not be queer, the second should have a mostly queer cast), so I hope they don’t disappoint.
Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix
I loved Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, and now I want to know more about the magical world of Feng Lu, but I have to say I’m not sure it’s going to work for me. I think I’m going to like this sequel, but it’s a retelling of Snow White from Snow White’s perspective this time, and if it’s played straight, I probably won’t like it at all. I hope Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix will surprise me in a good way.
Have you read or want to read any of these?
