T5W: Long & Intimidating Novels + Tome Topple TBR

Top 5 Wednesday is a goodreads group created by Lainey (gingerreadslainey) and now hosted by Sam (thoughtsontomes). This week’s topic is Largest Books on TBR.

In honor of #TomeToppleReadathon coming back this month, discuss those big books on your shelf!

I decided to talk about both the largest and the most intimidating books on my TBR, because talking about them makes me more likely to read them. I did a similar list a few months ago, and out of those five books, only one is still on my TBR (and I’m currently reading another).

I’m highlighting in red the titles that are on my TBR for Tome Topple.

Tomes

The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco (528 pages) – I’d love to get to this intimidating but very intriguing sequel (look at that cover!) during Tome Topple, but I already know that’s not going to happen: I need to reread The Bone Witch first, and that will take a while once I start.

Furyborn by Claire Legrand (501 pages) – I can’t wait to read this. I don’t know if it will happen during Tome Topple, but I have a really good feeling about this, even with all the mixed reviews I’ve read. It deals with antiheroines and villains and that’s always something I’m looking for.

The Phoenix Empress by K Arsenault Rivera (544 pages) – this will be my #1 priority for Tome Topple, if I finish rereading The Tiger’s Daughter on time. I own an ARC, so I need to read this, and I’m always there for more Shefali and Shizuka (though the not-so-positive ARC reviews make me a bit hesitant).

Tomes that Aren’t Out Yet

Jade War by Fonda Lee (600 pages) – I finished Jade City just a few days ago. While I did really like it, the ending was underwhelming, so at first I wasn’t completely sure I wanted to read the 600-page-long sequel. But I care about these characters too much to not know what will happen to them next. It will be out in May 2019.

The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty (619 pages) – the longest book on my TBR. I won’t lie, I find it very intimidating, because maybe I need to reread The City of Brass to read it, and that one is long too. It will be out in January 2019, but I’ll probably procrastinate and not read it until months later.

Middlegame by Seanan McGuire (528 pages) – I actually have no idea what this is about and I’m fine with that, I just need the ominous cover + Seanan McGuire combination to add a book to my TBR. It will be out in May 2019.

Most Intimidating Books

Not necessarily tomes, even though some are, but I procrastinate on them as if they were tomes.

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin (500 pages) – I will get to this. I know I keep saying that but I have no intention of removing it from my TBR until I have finished it.

Vengeful by V.E. Schwab (575 pages) – I find this one intimidating for mainly two reasons. The first is that I liked Vicious a lot but not as much as most, I didn’t love it, so I’m not sure how I’ll feel about this sequel. The other reason is the hype, I’m waiting for it to die down a little before I start this.

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (464 pages) – this one doesn’t reach 500 pages, so it’s not really a tome according to Tome Topple standards, but I still think it’s really intimidating: I want to read it because Felicity, but I’ve heard it’s less fun than The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and I struggled with that one because of the pacing.

Tome Topple

202769So, my TBR for Tome Topple includes: The Phoenix Empress, Furyborn and The Fifth Season. I could also read In the Night Garden if I feel like it.

The challenges for this readathon are:

  • read more than one tome: I need to read two of the 3-4 books on my TBR
  • read a graphic novel (still over 500 pages): I don’t have one on my TBR, so I won’t
  • read a tome which is part of a series:  all of the ones I chose are
  • buddy read a tome: I don’t know, I don’t think this is going to happen
  • read an adult novel: all of them but Furyborn count.

I hope that this way I’m able to get to some of the book I’ve been avoiding because of their page number!

What is the longest books on your TBR? Have you read or want to read any of these? Are you participating in this round of Tome Topple?

  1. I also really need to read the Phoenix Empress but I’m scared because I liked the Tiger’s Daughter so much, and in a way I’m always worried sequels will ruin a first book I loved. I have no idea about that Seanan McGuire book either but I saw it on Netgalley and it intrigued me as well.

      1. I hope so too, but what I read makes me feel like what people disliked will be things I like. Because I’m really into the cosmic self-centred romance they have, which makes them kind of morally grey characters, but I bet lots of people who aren’t that into that type of romance don’t like it as much — so I’m really hoping it works out in that sense. But I’m also scared of starting it, because I always feel like sequels have the possibility of ruining a good first book.

  2. I’m not sure what the longest book on my TBR is, but The City of Brass, Fate of the Tearling and Bitter Greens definitley look like the biggest ones. I’m surprised Furyborn and The Heart Forger are both 500+ pages, they didn’t feel that long! I hope you enjoy them both and good luck with Tome Topple!

    1. Thank you! I didn’t expect Furyborn and The Heart Forger to be that long either, I was surprised when I saw them after sorting my goodreads TBR from highest to lowest page number.
The City of Brass is a heavy one, but I thought it was worth the… not great pacing of the first half.

  3. I wasn’t super interested in Furyborn until after I read the author’s most recent novel Sawkill Girls and fell in love with her writing. So now I’m looking forward to it. Great list!

  4. Good luck with your Tome Topple TBR! 🙂 I’m planning to finally get to The Gentleman’s Guide as I still haven’t read that book 😅 I also really want to read Vengeful (I actually loved Vicious a lot, which also sets up pretty high expectations tbh), but I’ll have to wait till Christmas to get my copy 😱

    1. Thank you! I’m trying to get into Vengeful with low expectations and not listen too much to the hype, but I’m sure I’ll at least enjoy reading it – I usually end up liking Schwab’s books. And good luck with your TBR!
